Definition
Haemorrhoids are dilated veins of the anal canal; a fissure is a small tear in the skin of the anus. Both can cause pain and bright red bleeding with stools.
Causes
Constipation and straining are the main causes, along with pregnancy and prolonged sitting.
Diagnosis
- Clinical examination of the anal margin and digital rectal examination.
- Anoscopy to see internal haemorrhoids.
Treatments
A fibre-rich diet, good hydration, sitz baths and local creams relieve most cases. For a fissure, an ointment that relaxes the sphincter speeds healing. Persistent forms can benefit from an instrumental or surgical treatment.
Haemorrhoids can cause seepage or light bleeding that stains underwear. A thin bladder control pad or an ultra-thin napkin catches it discreetly; change it regularly for comfort.
